Permanent School Lockdowns Foster Fear, Not Safety, Educator Warns
In the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Tumbler Ridge secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, school boards across Canada are reportedly considering implementing measures that would lock exterior doors permanently, with exceptions only for brief periods before and after school, and during lunch hours. This proposed security approach has sparked significant debate among educators and parents alike.
An Extreme and Ineffective Overreaction
As both a teacher and a parent, I view this proposed policy as an extreme and ultimately ineffective overreaction to school violence. Individuals determined to cause harm will simply adapt their strategies to circumvent locked doors. Proper lockdown procedures, when implemented correctly, prove far more effective at preserving lives than maintaining perpetually locked entrances.
While precautions such as Hour Zero protocols for lockdowns or shelter-in-place scenarios are valuable tools, keeping schools in what amounts to a permanent shelter-in-place order carries substantial negative consequences that undermine the very purpose of educational institutions.
Lessons from the Pandemic Era
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of locking down schools. This approach ended up alienating numerous community members who had previously volunteered their time and resources. Transforming schools into fortified structures makes them feel like prisons rather than places of learning and growth. This perception affects everyone involved—students, staff, and the broader community.
Schools should serve as welcoming hubs for human interaction, whether through sports activities, artistic endeavors, or hosting community events and meetings. When we allow fear to dictate how our schools operate, we risk losing this essential social function.
The Importance of Balanced Security Measures
Rather than implementing permanent lockdowns that create fortress-like environments, educational institutions should focus on comprehensive safety strategies that include proper training, effective communication systems, and well-practiced emergency protocols. These measures can provide security without sacrificing the open, inviting atmosphere that fosters learning and community engagement.
The challenge lies in finding the right balance between necessary security precautions and maintaining schools as accessible community centers. Overly restrictive measures may provide a false sense of security while actually diminishing the quality of the educational experience and community relationships.
As we move forward from the Tumbler Ridge tragedy, it is crucial that we approach school safety with thoughtful consideration rather than reactive fear. Our children deserve learning environments that are both secure and conducive to their social and academic development.
