Alberta Announces Major Investment in Modular Classrooms for 2026-27 School Year

In response to significant enrollment growth across the province, the Alberta government has committed funding for 189 modular classrooms to be deployed for the 2026-27 academic year. This initiative aims to create approximately 5,450 new student spaces to alleviate overcrowding in schools.

Distribution of Modular Classrooms Across School Boards

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides revealed that Edmonton school boards will receive the largest share of these temporary learning spaces, with a total of 63 modular classrooms allocated. Calgary school boards will receive 58 units, while other school authorities across Alberta will be provided with 68 modular classrooms.

The specific breakdown includes:

  • Calgary Board of Education: 46 modular classrooms
  • Calgary Catholic School District: 12 units (including 5 replacements and 9 relocations)
  • Edmonton Catholic Schools: 31 modular classrooms plus 4 washroom facilities
  • Edmonton Public Schools: 32 modular classrooms plus 1 washroom facility
  • Other school authorities (29 total): 68 modular classrooms plus 7 washroom facilities (including 5 replacements and 20 relocations)

Timeline and Implementation Challenges

Minister Nicolaides acknowledged that while some modular classrooms may be available at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, others might be deployed later due to construction timelines and site readiness factors. "We do hope that some of them can be available for the start of the school year. Others will be relocated so those can be a little faster," Nicolaides stated in an interview.

The province is spending the entire $200 million allocated for 2026 under the Modular Classroom Program on these 189 units. This program is part of a broader $600 million commitment over three years that aims to create approximately 17,000 new student spaces across Alberta.

Addressing Overcrowding in Edmonton Schools

Edmonton Catholic Schools Chair Sandra Palazzo welcomed the investment, noting it will help address overcrowding in 11 schools within their district. "This significant investment is very responsive to our ongoing infrastructure advocacy and supports our enrolment growth as more families choose Catholic education," Palazzo commented.

Additional Education Funding Initiatives

Beyond the modular classroom program, Budget 2026 includes $355 million dedicated to class size and complexity relief. Of this amount, $55 million has been earmarked for the classroom complexity grant, though specific allocation decisions are still pending according to Minister Nicolaides.

"I don't want to mention any specific timelines, but we are pretty close to completing our analysis, and should be in a position to make an announcement fairly soon," the Education Minister added regarding the complexity funding distribution.

Broader Context of Alberta School Infrastructure

The modular classroom initiative comes as Alberta currently has 161 ongoing public-school construction projects across the province, with 12 expected to be completed by the end of the current fiscal year. This dual approach of both permanent construction and temporary modular solutions reflects the government's strategy to manage rapid enrollment growth while longer-term infrastructure projects are underway.

The funding announcement represents a substantial response to the pressing need for additional learning spaces as school boards throughout Alberta continue to experience unprecedented enrollment increases that have strained existing facilities.
