U of T only Canadian school in global top 20 ranking

The University of Toronto was the only Canadian institution to place among the top 20 in a new global university ranking released Wednesday. The ranking, compiled by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), placed U of T at 17th overall, a slight drop from its 16th-place finish in 2025.

Ranking methodology and performance

The CWUR ranking evaluates universities based on eight indicators: quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, research output, quality publications, influence, citations, and broad impact. U of T scored particularly well in research output and citations, reflecting its strong performance in academic publishing and scholarly influence.

Globally, Harvard University retained the top spot, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. The top 10 was dominated by U.S. and U.K. institutions, with the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford rounding out the top five.

Other Canadian universities in the top 100 include the University of British Columbia at 24th, McGill University at 26th, and the University of Alberta at 77th. The University of Montreal and McMaster University also placed in the top 150, at 101st and 108th respectively.

“This ranking reflects the University of Toronto’s continued commitment to research excellence and global impact,” said U of T President Meric Gertler in a statement. “We are proud to be recognized among the world’s leading institutions, and we remain focused on fostering innovation and preparing students for success.”

Trends in global rankings

The CWUR ranking also highlighted a growing presence of Asian universities in the top 100, with China’s Tsinghua University rising to 14th and Peking University climbing to 18th. This shift underscores the increasing investment in higher education in Asia, particularly in research and development.

European universities, while still prominent, have seen a slight decline in relative performance, with several institutions dropping in rank compared to the previous year. The ranking noted that the University of Oxford fell from 4th to 5th, while the University of Cambridge remained at 4th.

Implications for Canadian higher education

The results come amid ongoing discussions about funding and support for Canadian universities. Experts say that maintaining a top-tier institution like U of T is critical for Canada’s global competitiveness in research and innovation. However, they caution that without increased investment, Canadian universities may struggle to keep pace with international peers.

“Canada’s research universities are a key driver of economic growth and social progress,” said Dr. Sarah Johnson, a higher education policy analyst at the University of Ottawa. “This ranking is a reminder of the importance of sustained support for post-secondary education and research.”
