Major Donation Transforms Railway Education at SAIT
A significant educational enhancement has arrived at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in the form of a donated and fully refurbished tank car. This substantial contribution, valued at approximately $100,000 including transportation and equipment, represents a transformative investment in hands-on learning for students pursuing careers in the railway industry.
Expanding Practical Training Opportunities
The rail car was generously donated by Caltrax Inc. and delivered to SAIT's Point Trotter satellite campus, where it joins an existing collection that includes a box car, a flat deck, and a hopper car. This addition significantly broadens the variety of equipment available for student training, providing a more comprehensive educational experience that mirrors real-world industry conditions.
"It's a huge addition to our program," emphasized Jason Purdy, academic chair at Point Trotter. The tank car enables students from both the railway conductor program and the crane operator program to gain practical experience with equipment they will encounter throughout their professional careers.
Enhancing Safety and Industry Preparedness
According to Talia O'Donoghue, an instructor in the railway conductor program, the tank car provides invaluable hands-on training that better prepares students for employment. "Anything that they can get their eyes on here at SAIT before they go to the railway is just going to better them when they get to industry," she explained. "The railway has multiple different types of rail cars, and they're not all the same. They don't function the same. The brakes don't work the same."
Safety remains a primary focus of the program, with the tank car facilitating training simulations involving the transportation of dangerous goods. Students learn critical skills including understanding different braking systems, railway codes and standards, operational procedures, and effective communication protocols.
Addressing Industry Workforce Needs
Trevor Hammer, senior director of sales and business development for Caltrax, highlighted the broader industry context driving this educational investment. "The biggest goal here is to help drive more students and more railroaders, railway people, into the industry," he stated. "As we watch the generations now that are starting to retire from this industry, we're not bringing enough in to backfill behind it. A lot of this is to help drive that."
Hammer, who also serves as chair of the program advisory committee for Point Trotter, described how multiple industry partners collaborated to make this donation possible. When program faculty suggested acquiring a tank car for training purposes, Caltrax enthusiastically pursued the opportunity, working with collaborators including Sherwin Williams, North Star Contracting, Trans-Tech Railcar Decals, and Vertical Crane and Rigging.
"The collaboration of several different industry partners has been able to put a real world, modern piece of equipment here for the students to learn on moving equipment," Hammer noted, emphasizing the practical value this brings to SAIT's educational programs.
Building the Next Generation of Railway Professionals
This substantial donation represents more than just equipment—it signifies a strategic investment in developing the next generation of railway industry professionals. Students who participated in unloading the new car gained immediate practical experience, while future cohorts will benefit from enhanced training opportunities that bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace requirements.
The tank car donation strengthens SAIT's position as a leading institution for railway education, providing students with authentic, hands-on learning experiences that directly translate to improved job readiness and safety awareness in their future careers.
