Saskatoon School Board Names New High School Holmwood Collegiate
Holmwood Collegiate Approved as New Saskatoon High School Name

The Saskatoon Public Schools board of education has officially named the city's next public high school. Holmwood Collegiate will be the name of the division's newest secondary school, located in the Holmwood neighbourhood adjacent to Brighton in the city's northeast.

Approval and Timeline

The name was approved on June 16 during the board's final meeting of the 2025-26 school year. While the school is still years away from opening, this milestone marks a significant step forward. The provincial government announced funding for the school in March 2024. Currently in the design phase, the school is expected to open around 2030 or 2031.

Shared Site and Facilities

Holmwood Collegiate will share a site with a new Catholic high school. Additionally, a City of Saskatoon leisure centre is planned to be built near the schools. This development aims to address overcrowding at public schools Centennial and Walter Murray, as well as Catholic schools St. Joseph and Holy Cross.

Naming Process

The name was selected following public and student engagement during the spring. From May 1 to 19, Saskatoon Public Schools gathered feedback through a public survey and engagement activities involving Grades 4, 5, and 6 students from feeder schools—many of whom are expected to attend Holmwood Collegiate when it opens. The board of education made the final decision.

According to Saskatoon Public Schools, the name was expected to reflect the values and mission of public education; recognize the history, geography, or cultural significance of the Saskatoon community; be respectful and appropriate for an educational institution; and be meaningful and enduring for future generations of students.

Board Chair Statement

“Choosing a name for a new school is an important milestone,” said board of education chair Kim Stranden. “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their ideas and perspectives.”

Historical Context of School Naming

Over more than a century of public schools in Saskatoon, naming choices have varied. Originally built in 1909 as Saskatoon Collegiate Institute, Nutana Collegiate was renamed in 1923 after its neighbourhood. Also in 1923, Bedford Road Collegiate opened. Between 1958 and 1966, three collegiates were built named after prominent citizens: Aden Bowman, Evan Hardy, and Walter Murray. Mount Royal Collegiate was named after its neighbourhood. In 1984, Marion M. Graham Collegiate opened, named after a renowned local educator. Centennial Collegiate (2005) honoured Saskatchewan's centennial, and Tommy Douglas Collegiate (2007) honoured the former premier.
