More than 400 customers in Toronto remain without power after a fire at a transmission station caused outages in the downtown core, according to utilities Toronto Hydro Corp. and Hydro One Ltd.
The disruption began after 11:30 a.m. local time, affecting more than 1,200 customers in a dense area populated with office towers, hospitals, academic institutions and shops. A single customer may include several tenants and occupants. Power has since been restored to nearly 900 customers, according to Toronto Hydro's outage map.
Fire crews are clearing a transmission station site, Hydro One said in a social media post, and it will assess damage afterward. “While we don't have a confirmed estimated time of restoration, we have been able to work with Hydro One to restore power to some impacted customers,” Toronto Hydro said in a separate social media post.
The outage impacted several key institutions. A hearing at the Ontario Securities Commission's Capital Markets Tribunal, beside Toronto's Old City Hall, was briefly interrupted before power was restored about 30 minutes later. Toronto Metropolitan University stated on social media that the institution was experiencing a power failure. Some traffic lights are also out, according to the city's police.
The city's subway system is operating normally, according to the Toronto Transit Commission's website.
