Major Traffic Disruptions Ahead for Toronto Motorists
Toronto drivers should prepare for significant traffic headaches in the coming weeks as city officials announce weekend closures for two of the city's busiest expressways. The Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway will undergo essential maintenance work on separate weekends, creating challenges for commuters and event-goers alike.
Scheduled Closure Details and Timing
The first closure affects the Gardiner Expressway, which will be fully closed from the Humber River to Spadina Avenue. This shutdown begins at 11 p.m. on Friday and continues until 5 a.m. on Monday. Following this, the Don Valley Parkway will experience its own closure from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street Ramp on the Gardiner, scheduled from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8 through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.
City officials emphasize that these closures are weather-dependent and will be rescheduled if necessary. The maintenance work represents more than 30 overnight road closures consolidated into these weekend periods, which officials claim will save drivers up to 150 hours of disruption compared to piecemeal closures.
Maintenance Scope and Strategic Importance
The extensive maintenance program includes multiple critical infrastructure improvements:
- Repairs to cracks and potholes throughout the expressway systems
- Maintenance and replacement of guard rails for enhanced safety
- Comprehensive bridge inspections and removal of loose concrete
- Repainting of lane markings and lighting inspections with necessary repairs
- Clearing catch basins to prevent potential flooding issues
- Removal of debris, weeds, litter, and graffiti from roadways
Additionally, crews will complete paving of the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue as part of the City's long-term Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan. The Jameson Avenue off-ramp will also receive new paving.
Sports Events Compound Traffic Challenges
The timing of these closures presents particular challenges for sports fans and event attendees. During the affected weekends, multiple major events are scheduled:
- The Toronto Blue Jays will be playing home games both weekends
- The Toronto Raptors host the Cleveland Cavaliers for Game 3 of the NBA Playoffs first round on Sunday afternoon
- Toronto FC faces Atlanta United in a Saturday afternoon match
- The Toronto Marlies may have playoff games scheduled for Sunday
City officials acknowledge the unfortunate timing but emphasize the necessity of the maintenance work. "This planned work supports the City's long-term strategy to maintain expressway infrastructure, reduce future disruptions, and prepare Toronto for major events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026," stated officials in a news release.
Additional Projects During Closures
The DVP closure will enable multiple concurrent projects beyond basic maintenance. Crews will resurface sections of the parkway, continue work on the Eastern Avenue bridge project and the Bayview-Bloor ramp. The closure also provides Metrolinx with access to work on part of the Ontario Line project and allows Toronto Hydro to complete essential electrical maintenance work.
Drivers are strongly advised to plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time during these closure periods. The city recommends considering public transportation options where possible to avoid the anticipated congestion on alternate roadways.
