Ontario Provincial Police are urging drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles after a police cruiser was struck on Highway 401. The incident occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, at approximately 3:16 PM EDT. No injuries were reported, but the collision serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by first responders on highways.
Details of the Incident
According to OPP Central Region, the cruiser was parked on the shoulder of Highway 401 when it was hit by a passing vehicle. The officer inside the vehicle was not injured. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Charges are pending.
Move Over Law
Under Ontario's Move Over law, drivers are required to slow down and move over to an adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing on the side of the road. If they cannot safely move over, they must reduce speed to 60 km/h on roads with a speed limit of 80 km/h or more, or to the posted speed limit on roads with a lower limit.
OPP remind motorists that failure to comply can result in fines, demerit points, and license suspension. The law applies to police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, and maintenance vehicles.
Safety Reminder
“This incident could have had a tragic outcome,” said OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt. “We are grateful the officer was not hurt, but we need all drivers to be vigilant and obey the Move Over law. These officers are there to help you, and they deserve a safe working environment.”
The OPP urge anyone who sees an emergency vehicle stopped on the highway to reduce speed and change lanes where possible. Distracted driving, speeding, and impairment remain leading causes of collisions involving emergency vehicles.
