OC Transpo has announced that final preparations are underway for trial running on the O-Train East Extension, a significant step toward expanding Ottawa's light rail transit system. The extension will add several new stations and improve connectivity for residents in the eastern part of the city.
Trial Running Details
The trial running phase involves testing trains on the new tracks under simulated operating conditions to ensure safety and reliability. OC Transpo officials stated that this phase is critical to identify and resolve any issues before passenger service begins. The extension is part of the larger Stage 2 LRT project, which aims to expand the O-Train network across Ottawa.
Impact on Commuters
Once operational, the East Extension will provide faster and more frequent service to communities such as Orleans and Trim. OC Transpo expects the extension to reduce travel times and alleviate congestion on existing bus routes. According to OC Transpo, the trial running is scheduled to last several weeks, with a target opening date later this year.
Community Response
Local officials have welcomed the progress, noting that the extension will support economic growth and reduce carbon emissions. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said, “This is a major milestone for Ottawa's transit system. The East Extension will transform how people move around our city.” Residents have expressed optimism but also caution about potential delays, given past issues with the LRT system.
