Ottawa transit officials have indicated that redesigned axles for the O-Train Line 1 are still years away from implementation. The update was provided during a City of Ottawa transit committee meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Committee Meeting Details
Officials from Alstom, Rideau Transit Group (RTG), and the City of Ottawa appeared before the transit committee to discuss the ongoing axle issues. Among those present were Noah Heulitt, Alstom Vice President of North American Services; Grant Bailie, RTG CEO; Troy Charter, Assistant General Manager of Transit Services; Rick Leary, General Manager of Transit Services; and Sabrina Pasian, Chief Safety Officer of Transit Services.
Axle Redesign Timeline
The committee heard that the redesign process is complex and involves extensive testing to ensure safety and reliability. Officials emphasized that while progress is being made, the timeline for completion extends several years into the future. This has implications for service frequency and maintenance schedules on Line 1.
Rick Leary noted that the current axles are being monitored closely, but a permanent solution requires a complete redesign and validation. The delay has frustrated some committee members, who expressed concerns about the impact on commuters and the city's reputation.
The O-Train Line 1 has faced recurring axle-related issues since its launch, leading to service disruptions and speed restrictions. The redesigned axles are expected to address these problems, but the extended timeline means riders may continue to experience limitations for the foreseeable future.
