A 64-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a New Year's Eve collision with a vehicle in Oshawa, casting a shadow over the holiday celebrations.

The incident occurred just after 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31st, near the intersection of Simcoe Street North and Byng Avenue, south of Taunton Road. Durham Regional Police and emergency crews responded to the scene.
Investigators determined that the victim, a 64-year-old man, was struck by a southbound Ford hatchback. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.
Victim Rushed to Toronto Trauma Centre
The injured pedestrian suffered critical, life-threatening injuries. He was urgently transported to a major trauma centre in Toronto, where he remained in critical condition following the crash.
The collision necessitated the closure of Simcoe Street for several hours overnight as members of the Collision Investigation Unit conducted their initial investigation at the scene.
