Two Hospitalized After Highway 400 Crash
Two individuals sustained life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle collision on Highway 400 overnight, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes near Barrie, prompting a full highway closure for several hours as emergency crews responded.
OPP officers were called to the scene just after midnight. The vehicle, which had left the roadway, was found in a ditch. Both occupants were extricated by firefighters and airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto. Their conditions remain critical.
Highway Closure and Investigation
The southbound lanes of Highway 400 were closed between Highway 89 and Highway 27 for the investigation and cleanup. The highway reopened shortly before 6 a.m. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and police are asking anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
“We are appealing to any witnesses or drivers with dashcam video to contact OPP,” said Constable Peter Leon, OPP spokesperson. “Speed and impairment have not been ruled out as factors.”
The collision is the latest in a series of serious crashes on Highway 400, which has seen a rise in fatal incidents this year. According to OPP data, there have been 12 fatalities on the highway in 2026, up from 9 at the same time last year.
