Construction Begins on International Cargo Hub at Edmonton International Airport
Edmonton International Airport has officially broken ground on a new international cargo hub, a project expected to significantly enhance the region's trade capacity and create hundreds of jobs. The announcement was made on May 13, 2026, marking a major milestone for the airport's expansion plans.
The cargo hub will feature state-of-the-art facilities designed to handle increased freight volumes, including temperature-controlled storage for perishable goods and advanced security systems. The project is part of a broader strategy to position Edmonton as a key logistics gateway for Western Canada and international markets.
Officials estimate the hub will create over 1,000 construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions once operational. The facility is scheduled to open in 2028, with the first phase focusing on warehouse and runway infrastructure.
"This is a transformative investment for our region," said the airport's CEO in a statement. "The cargo hub will not only boost our economy but also strengthen supply chains across Canada."
The project has received support from all levels of government, including federal funding for infrastructure improvements. Local businesses have expressed optimism about the potential for increased export opportunities, particularly in agriculture and energy sectors.
Environmental assessments have been completed, and the airport has committed to incorporating sustainable building practices, including solar panels and energy-efficient lighting. The hub is expected to reduce truck traffic by consolidating cargo operations on-site.
Construction is set to proceed in multiple phases, with the first phase expected to be completed by late 2027. The full build-out will include additional hangars, maintenance facilities, and expanded apron space for cargo aircraft.
