North-south traffic on 105 Street at 102 Avenue in downtown Edmonton will be closed starting July 10, 2026, for Valley Line West LRT construction, the city announced. The closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing work on the light rail transit line.
Closure Details and Timeline
The intersection of 105 Street and 102 Avenue will be closed to north-south traffic. The city has not specified an exact end date for this closure, but it is part of the broader construction schedule for the Valley Line West LRT. Earlier this year, 102 Avenue was closed between 102 and 107 streets from March 16 until the end of 2026 for the same project.
According to the city, the closure is required to allow crews to safely install track and other infrastructure. Detours will be in place for motorists, and pedestrians will have designated paths around the construction zone.
Impact on Downtown Traffic
The closure is expected to cause delays for drivers in downtown Edmonton. The city advises commuters to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Public transit routes may also be affected, with some bus stops temporarily relocated.
“We understand this closure will be inconvenient, but it is necessary to complete the LRT project on schedule,” said a city spokesperson in a statement. “We encourage residents to use public transit, bike, or walk during this period.”
Valley Line West LRT Project
The Valley Line West LRT is a 14-kilometre extension from downtown Edmonton to Lewis Farms, with 14 stations. Construction began in 2020 and is expected to be completed by 2028. The project aims to improve transit connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the growing west end of the city.
The closure on 105 Street is one of several planned disruptions as work progresses. The city has committed to providing regular updates to the public through its website and social media channels.
