Major Duplex Fire in Windsor Causes Extensive Damage and Displacement

A substantial early morning fire at a duplex in Windsor's South Central neighborhood has resulted in an estimated $500,000 in damages, according to Windsor Fire and Rescue Services. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 14, 2026, has displaced two residents from their home.

Fire Details and Response

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 600 block of Irvine Avenue, near Lillian Avenue, at approximately 5:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a residential fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a blaze that had originated on the main floor of the lower unit and subsequently spread to the upper unit of the duplex.

Fortunately, no residents were home at the time of the fire, preventing potential injuries. However, the two individuals who reside in the duplex have been displaced due to the extensive damage.

Investigation Findings and Injuries

Fire investigators have preliminarily determined the cause to be accidental, though they have not completely ruled out electrical factors at this stage of the investigation. "Electrical causes cannot be ruled out at this time," officials stated, indicating that the investigation remains ongoing.

During fire suppression efforts, one firefighter sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Smith. The injured firefighter received medical attention, and their condition is reported as stable.

Second Fire Incident in Windsor

This duplex fire follows another residential fire that occurred just hours earlier on Friday night at a home in the 1100 block of Josephine Avenue. Officials determined that fire was caused by candle usage, exacerbated when high winds knocked out power to the home after tree limbs fell.

While no injuries were reported in that incident, seven people were displaced, and damages were estimated at approximately $200,000.

Community Impact and Safety Considerations

The consecutive fires highlight ongoing fire safety concerns in the Windsor area, particularly during periods of inclement weather. Fire officials emphasize the importance of:

  • Proper electrical maintenance in residential properties
  • Safe use of candles and alternative lighting during power outages
  • Regular inspection of trees and vegetation near power lines
  • Functioning smoke detectors and fire escape plans

Both incidents have resulted in significant property damage and displacement, underscoring the need for continued vigilance regarding fire prevention measures in residential settings.
