Hockey legend Chris Chelios is making a major power play in the real estate market, listing his spectacular Malibu beachfront mansion for $59,999,950 US. The Hall of Fame defenceman, known for his remarkable 26-season NHL career, is seeking a substantial return on the property he purchased over two decades ago.
Luxury Property Details
The stunning estate is located within the exclusive, gated Paradise Cove community in Malibu, California. Built in 1982, the primary dwelling spans 3,795 square feet across three stories and features four bedrooms and five bathrooms. The property boasts numerous luxury amenities including a large kitchen with high-end appliances, two garages, a media/game room, hot tub, and barrel sauna.
According to the property listing, the home is highlighted by a fireside living room that opens to an al fresco lounging and entertaining deck, plus a kitchen sporting an eat-in island and breakfast nook. The estate also features a massive rooftop deck and direct beach access from another cabana/patio area, offering breathtaking ocean views and California coastal living at its finest.
Substantial Price Reduction
This isn't the first time Chelios has attempted to sell the property. According to Robb Report, the original asking price in 2023 was $75 million. TMZ reported that the price was subsequently reduced to $67.5 million before the current listing of just under $60 million, representing an 11% price cut from the previous asking price.
Despite the price reductions, Chelios stands to make an incredible profit on the property. The three-time Stanley Cup champion and his wife Tracee purchased the home for $6 million in the summer of 2003. If sold at the current asking price, the transaction would represent nearly a tenfold return on their initial investment over 22 years.
Legendary Hockey Career
Chris Chelios enjoyed one of the longest and most successful careers in NHL history, playing an astounding 26 seasons from his debut in the 1983-84 campaign until his retirement in 2009-10 at age 48. During his career, he suited up for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Atlanta Thrashers.
His career statistics are equally impressive: 1,651 regular-season games (ninth all-time), 185 goals, 948 points, and 2,891 penalty minutes. Chelios won the Stanley Cup three times—once with the Canadiens and twice with the Red Wings—earned three Norris Trophies as the league's top defenceman, and was selected as a seven-time NHL All-Star. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
The Chicago native, now 63 years old and a grandfather, remains involved in the hockey community. He was recently in attendance at the November 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame inductions to present 2025 inductee Brianna Decker with her plaque. The sale of the Malibu property is being handled by Carl Gambino and John Bercsi of The Gambino Group at Compass.
