Brampton Man Faces Charges in Major Retail Theft Operation

Peel Regional Police have charged a Brampton man following a significant recovery of stolen goods valued at approximately $30,000. The items seized include 100 bricks of butter, 91 tubs of ghee—a clarified butter from India—and 300 bottles of alcohol.

Details of the Investigation and Arrest

After a three-month investigation into retail theft and distribution, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Brampton on Monday. The operation led to the arrest of Pintu Gohil, 48, who now faces two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

Gohil was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on April 7. The police emphasized that this case is part of broader efforts to combat retail crime in the region.

Impact of Retail Theft on the Community

Peel Acting Deputy Chief Hubert Hiltz highlighted the serious consequences of retail theft in a statement. "Retail theft is not a victimless crime," he said. "When businesses are targeted, the impact is felt across the community, from higher prices and lost jobs to reduced investment in our neighbourhoods."

He added that Peel Regional Police remain committed to collaborating with businesses, residents, and partners to enhance community safety and support the local economy.

Trends in Retail Theft Statistics

In 2025, nearly 7,500 retail thefts were reported to Peel Regional Police. However, data shows a 6% reduction in such incidents since 2024-25, indicating some progress in addressing this issue.
