Sandra Trenerry, a resident of Gibbons, Alberta, recently discovered she had won $2 million on a $20 scratch ticket purchased at her local pharmacy. The win has set off a cascade of life-changing plans, including possible early retirement and an elopement after an eight-year engagement.
"My fiancée and I have been engaged for eight years now. COVID put a damper on wedding plans, but we may elope now," Trenerry shared with a laugh.
A Lucky Purchase
Trenerry bought the winning ticket at Gibbons Remedy's RX Pharmacy, located at 4728-50 Ave. in Gibbons. She took the ticket back the next day to have it verified, unsure of what she was seeing.
"I said, 'Check these with me because I'm not sure I'm seeing this right,'" Trenerry recalled. "She checked it and said, 'Sandy … Oh my god.'"
Breaking the News
When Trenerry told her fiancé about the win, he was driving and nearly lost control of the vehicle. "He just about hit the ditch," she joked. "He was so surprised."
Life-Changing Plans
While Trenerry had already been planning to retire within the next year, the windfall has her considering early retirement. She also intends to buy a new vehicle and share some of the winnings with her grandchildren. The most exciting prospect, however, is the long-awaited wedding.
"I'm just so surprised. I can't believe it," Trenerry added.
