Vancouver Mining Firm Confirms Deaths of Nine Workers Kidnapped in Mexico

A mining company headquartered in Vancouver has officially confirmed the tragic deaths of nine of its employees, more than two months after they were abducted in Mexico. The workers were kidnapped on January 23 from the company's project site in Concordia, located in the violence-plagued state of Sinaloa, approximately 50 kilometres east of Mazatlan.

Details of the Incident and Investigation

In a news release issued on Monday, Vizsla Silver stated, "Nine colleagues have now been found deceased." The company emphasized that it remains in close contact with the family of the one colleague who is still missing and continues to support the authorities in their ongoing investigation. By February 9, three of the kidnapped employees had already been found dead, as reported by Mexico's Mining Chamber. Vizsla Silver confirmed in an update that same day that the families had been notified, though no further details were provided at that time.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced in a news conference that several suspects were apprehended in connection with the case. "From the moment the case became public, arrests were made," she said, per Mexico Business News. "Those detained provided information that led to further findings. Everything is being investigated." However, at one point, Mexico indicated it was investigating the company itself to determine if there was any responsibility regarding the labour conditions for the miners.

Cartel Involvement and Ongoing Violence

According to Mexican authorities, the workers were taken from a gated residential compound in Concordia. The kidnappings have been linked to Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa cartel led by the sons of jailed drug lord Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman. This group is engaged in a violent conflict with rival faction La Mayiza, which is loyal to the son of Ismael (El Mayo) Zambada, who previously co-led the Sinaloa cartel with Guzman. This incident highlights the ongoing cartel violence that continues to affect the region.

Company Response and Condolences

Vizsla Silver has stated that it is cooperating fully with Mexican authorities in the investigation. Michael Konnert, President and CEO of Vizsla Silver, expressed profound sorrow in a statement: "This is a devastating outcome, and our heartfelt condolences are with all the families impacted. We stand beside them with continued support as we mourn our colleagues and friends." He added, "We will always carry this loss with us. We will honour our colleagues through the work we do every day and our ongoing commitment to their families, our community in Sinaloa, and the values that define us."

The confirmation of these deaths underscores the severe risks faced by international workers in regions affected by organized crime and violence, raising concerns about safety protocols and corporate responsibility in high-risk areas.
