New N.B. Mineral Resources Act to Streamline Approvals

Natural Resources Minister John Herron, along with Premier Susan Holt, announced the new New Brunswick Mineral Resources Act on the front lawn of the New Brunswick Legislature. The legislation aims to streamline development approvals for mineral resources, reducing bureaucratic delays and encouraging investment in the province's mining sector.

Key Details of the Act

The proposed act seeks to modernize the regulatory framework for mineral exploration and extraction. It establishes clearer timelines for permit approvals, reduces overlapping regulations, and introduces a single-window approach for industry applications. According to Herron, the goal is to make New Brunswick more competitive while maintaining environmental and safety standards.

Industry Support

Robert Murray, President of the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, praised the initiative. "This act will provide certainty for investors and streamline processes that have historically slowed projects," he said. Jon Robinson, head of public policy at Falkirk, also expressed support, noting that the changes could lead to increased exploration activity and job creation.

Government Perspective

Premier Susan Holt emphasized that the act balances economic development with responsible resource management. "We are committed to growing our economy while protecting our environment. This legislation is a step forward in achieving both goals," she stated. The government expects the act to boost the province's GDP and attract new mining ventures.

Next Steps

The bill will now proceed to the legislative assembly for debate and potential amendments. If passed, it is expected to come into effect later this year. Stakeholders have been invited to provide feedback during the consultation period.
