In a significant move to solidify its position in the global business aviation market, Bombardier has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its manufacturing operations in Dorval, Quebec. The aerospace giant announced a $100 million project to construct a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing centre, marking a pivotal step in its long-term growth strategy.
A Strategic Expansion for Increased Capacity
The new facility will span an impressive 126,000 square feet and is strategically located near Bombardier's existing Challenger manufacturing centre and the Laurent Beaudoin Completion Centre. This expansion is designed to complement current operations with the clear goal of boosting overall production capacity and enhancing productivity. The company has scheduled the opening of the new centre for before the end of 2027.
David Murray, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, IT and Bombardier Operational Excellence System, emphasized the project's importance. "This major investment demonstrates our commitment to support Bombardier’s growth and build the infrastructure we need to maximize our productivity," Murray stated. He added that the expansion positions the company to meet rising global demand and maintain its leadership in the business aviation sector.
Government Backing with a $35 Million Loan
The substantial project has garnered significant support from the Quebec government. Christine Fréchette, Quebec’s Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, is set to announce a $35 million repayable, non-forgivable loan to back the initiative. This financial support will come from the provincial government's ESSOR program, which is managed by Investissement Québec and is designed to bolster the competitive manufacturing sector within the province.
Minister Fréchette highlighted the broader economic benefits of the investment. "By supporting the expansion of Bombardier, a world‑class prime contractor, our government is generating significant economic benefits for the entire Quebec supply chain and for the aerospace cluster," she said. The project is expected to create hundreds of highly skilled, well-paid jobs, further strengthening Quebec's expertise and global standing in the strategic aerospace industry.
Economic Ripple Effects and Future Outlook
This investment is more than a corporate expansion; it represents a considerable boost for the local and provincial economy. The creation of skilled job opportunities will have a positive ripple effect, supporting the wider aerospace ecosystem and supply chain in Quebec. Bombardier acknowledged the role of public investment programs, with Murray noting the effectiveness of Investissement Québec's ESSOR program in supporting business growth while creating quality local jobs.
The announcement was celebrated at an event in Dorval attended by government representatives, industry partners, and Bombardier employees. This $100 million manufacturing expansion underscores Bombardier's confidence in the future of business aviation and its commitment to maintaining its industrial roots and capabilities in Quebec as it competes on the world stage.
