SGI Gets Over 10,000 Claims After Regina Hailstorm

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has released updated figures on the number of claims received following the severe hailstorm that struck Regina on June 9. As of June 19, SGI reported that over 10,000 claims have been filed, reflecting the widespread damage caused by the storm.

Storm Impact and Response

The hailstorm, which hit Regina in the early evening, brought golf-ball-sized hail and strong winds, causing significant damage to vehicles, homes, and businesses. SGI officials stated that the majority of claims are for vehicle damage, with many residents reporting shattered windows and dented bodywork. Homeowners also filed numerous claims for damaged roofs, siding, and windows.

SGI has mobilized additional adjusters to process the surge in claims and is urging customers to report damage promptly. The insurer also reminded policyholders to take photos of damage and keep receipts for any temporary repairs.

Financial Toll

Preliminary estimates suggest the total insured damage could exceed $200 million, making it one of the costliest hailstorms in Saskatchewan history. The storm disrupted power for thousands of residents and prompted emergency shelter openings. City crews have been working to clear debris and assess damage to public infrastructure.

SGI CEO Andrew Cartmell expressed sympathy for those affected and assured that the company is committed to handling claims efficiently. “We understand this is a stressful time for many, and we are doing everything we can to support our customers,” he said.

Community Recovery

Local businesses have also been impacted, with some forced to close temporarily for repairs. The city of Regina has set up a dedicated webpage for storm recovery resources, including information on debris disposal and contractor licensing. Residents are advised to be cautious of potential scams and to verify contractor credentials before hiring.

Environment Canada confirmed that the storm was part of a severe thunderstorm system that moved through southern Saskatchewan. Meteorologists noted that the hail size and wind speeds were exceptional for early June.
