Calgary's Eavor Powers German Grid with World-First Geothermal Tech
Eavor's Geothermal Breakthrough: First Power in Germany

In a landmark achievement for the geothermal energy sector, Calgary-based Eavor Technologies Inc. has successfully begun delivering electricity to the grid in Germany. The company announced this historic milestone on December 4, 2025, marking the first commercial power production from its revolutionary Eavor-Loop™ technology at the Geretsried site.

A Canadian First on the Global Stage

This event positions the Alberta firm as a pioneer in scalable geothermal solutions. The Geretsried facility is the world's first commercial project of its kind, utilizing a closed-loop multilateral well system to generate clean, baseload power. Mark Fitzgerald, President and CEO of Eavor, stated the project has successfully delivered the "world's first electrons generated from closed-loop multilateral wells." He emphasized that the system's adaptability makes it a leading solution for diverse global regions seeking reliable geothermal power.

How the Eavor-Loop Technology Works

Unlike traditional geothermal plants that rely on finding specific underground reservoirs of hot water or steam, Eavor's closed-loop system circulates a proprietary working fluid through a massive underground radiator. This design offers significant advantages:

  • Geological Flexibility: It can operate in a wide range of rock types, not just near volcanic activity.
  • Minimal Environmental Footprint: The system uses minimal water, requires no fracking, and has a small surface land use.
  • Constant Power: It provides 24/7 dispatchable heat and electricity, independent of weather conditions.
  • Lower Lifetime Costs: The design avoids the need for redrilling and complex water treatment, leading to reduced operating expenses.

Fabricio Cesário, Head of Project Delivery and Operations for Eavor GmbH, called the Geretsried success a "blueprint" for wider European and global rollout. He credited early investors and partners for their confidence in advancing this first-of-its-kind project.

International Backing for a Clean Energy Future

The achievement has drawn praise from major financial and policy institutions. Nicola Beer, Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), highlighted the project as a "European success story in action." The EIB supported the venture with an InvestEU-guaranteed loan of nearly €45 million, complemented by an EU Innovation Fund grant.

From a Canadian perspective, Yannick Beaudoin, President and CEO of Canada Growth Fund Investment Management Inc. (CGFIM), celebrated the milestone. He stated it represents a landmark moment for Canadian clean technology innovation and leadership, aligning with CGF's mandate to support domestic technologies through first commercialization.

Eavor views the Geretsried project as just the beginning. The company plans to leverage the insights and data gained to scale its technology globally, aiming to make reliable, sustainable geothermal energy accessible everywhere. This breakthrough not only strengthens Germany's and Europe's energy security but also showcases Canadian engineering and sustainable energy innovation on the world stage.
