Brampton Set for Major Electricity Grid Enhancement with $28.6 Million Investment

Alectra Utilities has unveiled plans to invest approximately $28.6 million in capital renewal and system enhancement projects across Brampton in 2026. This significant financial commitment aims to bolster reliable electricity service, accommodate continued urban expansion, and strengthen the local electricity grid infrastructure.

Addressing Growth and Modernization Needs

Brampton stands as one of Ontario's fastest-growing communities, with escalating electricity demand driven by new housing developments, business expansion, and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles. The planned work for 2026 will focus on renewing deteriorating infrastructure, meeting rising electricity consumption, and modernizing the grid to ensure safe and dependable service for all customers.

Chris Hudson, Senior Vice President of Network Operations and Safety at Alectra Utilities, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Brampton continues to grow at a rapid pace, and reliable electricity is essential to supporting that growth. This investment will strengthen critical infrastructure, help reduce the risk of outages, and enable us to respond faster when service disruptions occur."

Key Components of the Investment Plan

The $28.6 million investment is strategically allocated across several critical areas to maximize impact:

  • Renewing Deteriorating Infrastructure: Alectra will allocate $9.4 million to replace aging equipment such as poles, transformers, and switchgear, enhancing day-to-day reliability for homes and businesses.
  • Expanding the Grid for New Development: To keep pace with population growth, $600,000 will be invested in connecting new customers across Brampton.
  • Modernizing for Faster Restoration: A $6.2 million investment will modernize substations and deploy automated devices, including replacing outdated controllers with automated switches to improve restoration speed during disruptions. An additional $1.0 million will fund extra automated devices for quicker response to grid disturbances.
  • Upgrading Underground Cable: $6.0 million will be used to replace and rehabilitate underground cables using cable injection technology, extending cable life and preventing outages.

Long-Term Strategic Approach

This investment in Brampton is part of Alectra Utilities' coordinated, multi-year strategy to reinforce electricity infrastructure across the communities it serves. As the largest municipally-owned electric utility in Canada, serving over one million homes and businesses in Ontario's Greater Golden Horseshoe area, Alectra is committed to driving economic growth and community vibrancy through essential energy investments.

The utility's mission focuses on being an energy ally, helping customers and communities navigate tomorrow's energy future with innovative solutions and a reliable power supply.
