Montreal police have arrested five individuals in connection with a cocaine trafficking ring, following a months-long investigation. The arrests were made in coordinated raids across the city, during which officers seized significant quantities of cocaine and cash.
Details of the Investigation
The investigation, led by the Montreal police's drug squad, began earlier this year after tips from the public about suspicious activity in several neighborhoods. Authorities used surveillance and undercover operations to build the case against the suspects, who are believed to have been operating a distribution network supplying cocaine to local dealers.
Seizures and Charges
During the raids, police confiscated more than 10 kilograms of cocaine, along with $500,000 in Canadian currency. The five suspects, all residents of Montreal, face charges of drug trafficking and conspiracy. They are scheduled to appear in court later this week.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Marie-Louise Rivard stated, "This operation has dismantled a significant drug trafficking network that was contributing to violence and addiction in our communities. We continue to urge the public to report suspicious activity."
Community Impact
The arrests have been welcomed by community leaders, who have long called for action against drug-related crime. Local resident Jean-Pierre Tremblay said, "It's reassuring to see the police taking action. This kind of activity affects everyone, especially our youth."
The investigation is ongoing, and police do not rule out further arrests. They are also working with other agencies to trace the source of the cocaine.
