Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki has been awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy, recognizing the NHL's best defensive forward, the league announced Thursday. His linemate, Cole Caufield, took home the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the player combining sportsmanship and high playing ability.
Suzuki's Defensive Dominance
Suzuki, 26, anchored the Canadiens' top line while excelling in faceoffs, penalty killing, and puck possession. He recorded 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists) in 82 games, but his defensive metrics set him apart. He led all forwards in takeaways and ranked second in blocked shots among centers. "Nick is the complete package," said Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis. "He makes everyone around him better."
Caufield's Skill and Sportsmanship
Caufield, 25, netted 42 goals and added 38 assists, while taking just six penalty minutes all season. His clean play and offensive flair made him a clear choice for the Lady Byng. "It's an honor to be recognized for playing the game the right way," Caufield said. "I owe a lot to my teammates."
The Selke Trophy is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, while the Lady Byng is determined by the same body. Suzuki becomes the first Canadiens player to win the Selke since Guy Carbonneau in 1989. Caufield is the first Montreal winner of the Lady Byng since Mats Naslund in 1988.
Both players are expected to be key contributors as the Canadiens look to build on a playoff appearance this season.
