A Barrie, Ont., man is among 17 individuals charged in a major extortion crackdown by Peel Regional Police, targeting a string of violent incidents aimed at South Asian businesses across the region. The charges stem from an investigation into multiple extortion attempts that involved threats, arson, and gunfire, causing fear within the community.
Details of the Crackdown
Police announced the charges on May 25, 2026, following a months-long probe dubbed Project E-Pariah. The suspects face a total of 68 charges, including extortion, arson, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. The accused range in age from 18 to 44 and hail from various parts of Ontario, including Barrie, Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto.
Impact on South Asian Businesses
The extortion ring primarily targeted South Asian business owners in Peel Region, demanding large sums of money under threat of violence. In several cases, suspects set fire to vehicles or businesses and fired shots at properties to intimidate victims. Police believe the group may have been operating for over a year, with links to organized crime.
“This was a coordinated effort to terrorize hardworking business owners,” said Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah in a statement. “We are committed to dismantling these networks and ensuring the safety of our communities.”
Community Reaction
Community leaders have praised the police action, noting that the extortion had created an atmosphere of fear. “Business owners were afraid to come forward, but this sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated,” said Raj Grewal, a representative of the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police urge anyone with information to come forward. The accused are scheduled to appear in court in Brampton later this month.
