Air Canada Secures Major Airbus A350-1000 Order for Fleet Modernization
Air Canada has announced a substantial acquisition of eight Airbus SE A350-1000 widebody aircraft, with the potential to expand the order to sixteen jets through exercised options. This strategic move is part of the airline's ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet, enhancing long-term cost efficiency and improving the passenger experience.
Financial and Delivery Details
The purchase agreement, if all options are utilized, is valued at approximately US$3 billion based on current aircraft valuations from analytics firm Ishka Ltd. The first delivery of the A350-1000 models is scheduled for the second half of 2030, marking a significant step in Air Canada's fleet renewal timeline.
Enhancing Efficiency and Comfort
Air Canada's decision to introduce the A350-1000, a model not previously part of its fleet, is driven by the aircraft's advanced capabilities. According to Airbus's website, the A350-1000 is a twin-aisle widebody that can accommodate up to 480 passengers and offers substantial fuel consumption reductions. This aligns with Air Canada's November program to upgrade planes with new interiors and enhanced technology systems, aiming to strengthen operational reliability and competitiveness.
John Di Bert, Air Canada's chief financial officer, emphasized in a statement that these aircraft will deliver improved operating economics, enhance operational reliability, and ensure the airline remains competitive across its global network.
Expanding the Order Book
This new order adds to Air Canada's existing commitments, which include 30 Airbus A321XLRs, 23 Airbus A220s, and 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners. The integration of the A350-1000s is expected to further diversify and modernize the airline's fleet, supporting its growth and sustainability goals in the aviation industry.
