Winnipeg Intensifies Mosquito Control Efforts
The city of Winnipeg is ramping up its efforts to manage the mosquito population this season, implementing a comprehensive strategy that includes larvicide treatments in standing water areas, increased surveillance, and public education campaigns. Officials are urging residents to eliminate standing water on their properties to reduce breeding sites.
According to city entomologists, the early and aggressive approach is designed to keep mosquito numbers low throughout the summer, minimizing both nuisance biting and the risk of diseases such as West Nile virus. The program involves treating catch basins, ditches, and other water-holding areas with biological larvicides that target mosquito larvae without harming other wildlife.
Residents are advised to wear insect repellent, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and to ensure window screens are intact. The city also reminds the public that while these measures are effective, community cooperation is essential for success.
This year's plan follows a particularly wet spring, which created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. By taking proactive steps, Winnipeg aims to keep the pest population manageable and protect public health.
