Two teenagers have been arrested and charged after allegedly using counterfeit money to purchase cellphones from at least 15 online sellers in the Durham Region, according to Durham Regional Police.
Details of the Scam
Police say the suspects arranged to meet sellers through online marketplaces and paid with fake bills. The investigation began after multiple complaints from victims who reported receiving counterfeit currency. Officers executed search warrants and seized evidence linking the teens to the scheme.
Charges Laid
A 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old male face charges including fraud under $5,000 and possession of counterfeit money. They were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police believe there may be additional victims and urge anyone who suspects they were targeted to come forward.
Impact on Victims
“This type of fraud can have a significant financial impact on individuals who rely on online sales,” said a police spokesperson. “We encourage sellers to verify payment methods and report suspicious activity.” The investigation is ongoing.
