Two men have been arrested in connection with a sophisticated gift card scam in Ontario, leading to the seizure of thousands of gift cards. The operation, dubbed Project Reload, was conducted by the Halton Regional Police Service.
Details of the Scam
Police allege that the suspects were involved in a complex scheme targeting retailers and consumers. The gift cards were obtained through fraudulent means, including tampering with cards in stores and using stolen credit card information to purchase them.
“This is not simple retail theft,” said a police spokesperson. “It’s an organized operation that caused significant financial losses.”
Investigation and Arrests
The investigation began after multiple reports of suspicious gift card activities. Officers executed search warrants at several locations, leading to the arrest of two individuals. They face charges including fraud, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy.
Police displayed the seized gift cards, which numbered in the thousands, emphasizing the scale of the operation.
