Persistent phone fraudsters are impersonating the Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in a scam that uses spoof technology to make it appear as though calls are coming from the Sudbury OPP number — 705-564-6900.
Police are warning the public to be vigilant after receiving multiple reports of the fraudulent calls. The scammers may claim to be police officers and demand money or personal information.
Sudbury OPP advise anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or local police. They emphasize that legitimate police officers will never demand payment or sensitive information over the phone.
The OPP is investigating the incidents and working with telecommunications providers to disrupt the scam. Residents are urged to share this warning with family and friends, especially those who may be more vulnerable to such schemes.
