Peel police charge 65 suspects in major shoplifting operation

Peel Regional Police have announced the results of a major anti-shoplifting operation, laying nearly 550 charges against 65 suspects. The initiative, named 'Project Filcher,' targeted organized retail theft across the region.

Details of the bust

Police said the charges range from theft under $5,000 to possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense. The suspects are accused of stealing from various retailers, including major chain stores and small businesses.

Peel Police Chief Steve Ryan emphasized that this was not simple retail theft but a coordinated effort by criminal networks. 'This is not simple retail theft,' Ryan said during a press conference. 'These are organized groups that steal to resell goods for profit.'
