A Guelph man has been charged with impaired driving after a witness reported seeing him exit his vehicle with a drink in hand, according to police. The incident occurred on July 10, 2026, prompting a response from the Guelph Police Service.
Witness report leads to investigation
Police received a call from a witness who observed the driver leaving a vehicle while holding an alcoholic beverage. Officers located the suspect and conducted a roadside screening, which resulted in a fail. The driver was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station for further testing.
The accused, a 34-year-old Guelph resident, faces charges of operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, and operation while exceeding 80 mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood. The identity of the accused has not been released pending a court appearance.
Impaired driving remains a concern
Guelph police continue to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving. “This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance,” said Constable Mike Gatto of the Guelph Police Service. “We thank the witness for coming forward, which helped prevent a potential tragedy.”
According to Statistics Canada, impaired driving incidents have decreased in recent years, but remain a significant public safety issue. In 2024, Ontario reported over 10,000 impaired driving charges.
The accused is scheduled to appear in a Guelph court on August 12, 2026. Police remind the public that anyone who suspects impaired driving should call 911 immediately.
