Waterloo Regional Police have arrested a Guelph man in connection with a string of bicycle thefts across the region. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Michael Thompson, faces multiple charges including theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
Investigation Details
Police began investigating after a series of bike thefts were reported in Guelph and surrounding areas over the past several weeks. Through surveillance footage and community tips, officers identified Thompson as a suspect. On April 22, police executed a search warrant at a residence on Victoria Road in Guelph, where they recovered several stolen bicycles, tools, and bike parts.
Charges Laid
Thompson has been charged with:
- Theft over $5,000
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Trafficking in stolen goods
He was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on May 10.
Police Appeal for Victims
Police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. They are asking anyone who had a bike stolen in the Guelph area in recent weeks to contact them to identify recovered property. “We want to reunite these bikes with their rightful owners,” said Constable Sarah Miller. “If your bike was stolen, please check with us.”
Prevention Tips
Authorities remind cyclists to secure their bikes with high-quality locks, record serial numbers, and register bikes with local police databases. The investigation remains ongoing.
