Driver Caught at 156 km/h in HOV Lane on Hwy 417

An Ottawa-area driver learned a costly lesson on Friday after being caught speeding in a high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane on Highway 417 near Moodie Drive. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that the solo driver was clocked at 156 km/h, well above the posted limit.

Police Warning

OPP Constable Michael Fathi issued a pointed warning on social media, stating: “If you plan to drive alone in the HOV lane, it’s probably not a good idea to drive at speeds that attract attention!” The comment underscores the double violation of using an HOV lane without a passenger and excessive speeding.

Consequences

The driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 30 days, and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days. Upon conviction, the driver faces a minimum fine of $2,000, six demerit points, and a one-year driving prohibition. The incident serves as a reminder of the serious penalties for reckless driving on Ontario highways.
