Calgary police have charged an 8-year-old and a 16-year-old in connection with the theft of approximately $4,000 worth of jewelry from Market Mall. The incident occurred on July 6, 2026, at the shopping centre located at 3625 Shaganappi Trail N.W.
Details of the Alleged Theft
According to authorities, the two minors entered a jewelry store in the mall and allegedly stole merchandise valued at $4,000. Police did not specify the type of jewelry taken or the name of the store. The suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident, and the stolen items were recovered.
The 16-year-old faces charges of theft over $5,000, while the 8-year-old cannot be criminally charged under Canadian law due to age. The Youth Criminal Justice Act sets the minimum age of criminal responsibility at 12 years old. As a result, the 8-year-old will be referred to community-based programs or social services.
Legal and Community Impact
This case highlights ongoing concerns about youth involvement in property crime. Calgary police spokesperson Sgt. Mark Thompson stated, “While we take all thefts seriously, we also recognize the need for appropriate interventions for young offenders. Our focus is on accountability and rehabilitation.” The 16-year-old is scheduled to appear in youth court on a later date.
Market Mall management declined to comment on the incident, referring inquiries to police. The mall remains open for business, and no further security concerns have been reported.
