University of Windsor Launches Women in Business Leadership Award to Empower Future Leaders
The University of Windsor has taken a significant step toward fostering gender diversity in business leadership with the introduction of a new award designed to support the next generation of women leaders. The Lenore Simpson Women in Business Award was officially launched at a luncheon event held at the Odette School of Business, strategically timed ahead of International Women's Day celebrations.
Inaugural Winner Encourages Active Participation
The inaugural recipient of this prestigious award is Makennah Murphy, a fourth-year Bachelor of Commerce student specializing in human resources who currently serves as president of the Odette Commerce Society. Murphy expressed profound gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in creating professional environments that support both women and other individuals within the community.
"It just feels like a great honour to be recognized for this award," Murphy told reporters. "It means a lot, especially as it being the first time this award is presented, and especially for women going forward, it's just important to recognize this leadership, to continue fostering this environment of professionalism."
Murphy offered practical advice for aspiring female leaders: "Just get involved and say 'yes' to every opportunity." This philosophy of active engagement reflects the award's mission to encourage women to pursue leadership roles in business.
Honoring a Trailblazing Legacy
The award bears the name of Lenore Simpson, a prominent figure in the Windsor business community for decades who served as board chair with the Better Business Bureau and sat on the local Chamber of Commerce board. Simpson passed away in 2024 at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of business excellence and community service.
Windsor Senator Sandra Pupatello, a former longtime politician and deputy Ontario premier, spoke at the event about Simpson's pioneering influence. "She was the one we watched. And, really, she was the one that counselled us to get to where we were going in our careers," Pupatello told reporters, describing Simpson as "way ahead of her time" as a businesswoman during an era when few women occupied boardroom positions.
Progress and Continued Advocacy
Senator Pupatello highlighted the meaningful progress in women's representation since she first entered politics in 1995, noting that while there were only three women in her initial caucus, she now serves in a Senate where women constitute the majority. "I am now in the Senate of Canada with the majority of them being women. So that is a tremendous change," she observed.
The senator emphasized how increased female representation in leadership positions directly influences policy priorities, citing examples such as enhanced focus on child care and elderly care. "That is happening because women are in leadership positions and acknowledging what they've dealt with and making changes for the generations that have been following," she explained.
Pupatello stressed the importance of visibility in leadership, stating: "Every time we can put women in a position where they can be seen by other women, it's a big boost to get more of them in there. I think it's important – you need to see it to be it, and that means we've got to push our women to get into leadership roles."
Building a Supportive Environment
The Lenore Simpson Women in Business Award represents more than just recognition; it serves as a catalyst for creating supportive professional environments that encourage women to pursue and excel in business leadership roles. By honoring both past trailblazers like Lenore Simpson and current emerging leaders like Makennah Murphy, the University of Windsor aims to inspire future generations of women to break barriers and assume positions of influence in the business world.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to address gender disparities in corporate leadership and demonstrates the university's commitment to fostering inclusive business education that prepares students for diverse professional landscapes.
