Halifax Mayor to Propose Cutting Red Tape and Patio Fees in Two Motions
Halifax Mayor Targets Red Tape, Patio Fees with New Motions

Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore is set to bring forward two motions at city council next week, targeting bureaucratic red tape and the fees charged for outdoor patio spaces. The announcements come as part of ongoing efforts to streamline municipal processes and support local businesses recovering from economic challenges.

Reducing Bureaucratic Delays

The first motion focuses on cutting red tape in city approvals and permits. Fillmore aims to simplify procedures for businesses and residents, reducing wait times and administrative hurdles. The proposed changes could affect areas such as construction permits, business licenses, and event approvals.

Eliminating Patio Fees

The second motion seeks to eliminate fees for outdoor patios, a move that would benefit restaurants and cafes. During the pandemic, temporary patio programs were popular, and Fillmore wants to make them permanent and fee-free to encourage outdoor dining and boost the hospitality sector.
