The run-up to the sixth annual Shoes for Kids YQL drive has officially launched in Lethbridge, Alberta. The initiative, which began in 2021, aims to collect new footwear for children from low-income families, ensuring they have appropriate shoes for the school year.
Community Support and Goals
Organizers have set a target of collecting 1,000 pairs of new shoes this year, up from 850 pairs last year. The drive runs until August 31, 2026, with drop-off locations at various businesses and community centers across Lethbridge.
“We are thrilled to see the community come together year after year to support local children,” said Sarah Mitchell, coordinator of Shoes for Kids YQL. “Every pair of shoes makes a difference in a child’s confidence and ability to participate in school activities.”
Impact and Distribution
The shoes collected will be distributed through local schools and social service agencies to children aged 4 to 18. In 2025, the drive provided footwear to over 700 children, according to organizers. The need remains high, with one in five families in Lethbridge reporting difficulty affording basic necessities like shoes.
“We’ve seen a steady increase in demand each year,” Mitchell added. “The support from donors and volunteers has been incredible, but we still have more work to do.”
How to Donate
New shoes can be donated at participating locations, including select retail stores, churches, and municipal buildings. Monetary donations are also accepted online, with every dollar going toward purchasing shoes. The drive is organized by a coalition of local charities, including the Lethbridge Food Bank and the United Way.
