Habitat Industry Build Brings Affordable Housing to Chestermere

Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta launched its fourth annual Industry Build event on Monday, bringing together over 100 energy and business professionals to construct affordable housing in Chestermere's Dawson's Landing community. The four-day initiative represents a $9.6-million investment in new homes, with workers from various companies contributing their skills to the project.

Community Collaboration in Action

Rachel Moore, vice-president of corporate services at Ovintiv, participated in the framing crew, helping to erect exterior walls starting at 7:30 a.m. Ovintiv has sent a team for all four years of the event. "A lot of people love the idea of being outside doing something different for the day, but also the teamwork, camaraderie, and just giving back to the community," Moore said. As the presenting sponsor, Ovintiv raised $35,000 for Habitat.

The worksite hosted 20 volunteers on Monday, guided by a crew leader who provided instructions. The event is highly popular, with many joining a waitlist for a chance to participate.

Progress Toward Move-In Ready Homes

Habitat president and CEO Gerrad Oishi announced that $125,000 has been raised through this year's event. Volunteers are working on multiple buildings at various stages of construction, with a focus on Building 3, where first-floor walls are being installed. The first building consists of six townhomes, similar to those in Calgary and Airdrie.

Habitat has already partnered with families for most of the new homes, and organizers hope residents can move in by the end of the year, allowing them to celebrate their first Christmas in their new homes.

Addressing Housing Affordability

With housing affordability a critical issue in Alberta, Moore emphasized that Habitat's work helps families establish community foundations. Oishi noted that Habitat continues to expand its efforts in Chestermere to meet growing demand for affordable housing. The Industry Build not only constructs homes but also fosters community spirit and corporate volunteerism.
