Canada's trucking industry is expressing strong enthusiasm for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, even as officials on both sides of the border announced a delay in its opening while unresolved issues are addressed.

Potential Savings for Carriers

Cargo carriers could save tens of thousands of dollars per month through lower tolls and more efficient access to one of North America's busiest trade corridors linking Ontario and Michigan, according to Stephen Laskowski, chief executive of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and Ontario Trucking Association, which represents over 5,500 members.

Laskowski noted that carriers are eager for the bridge to open, with many already setting up accounts with the Gordie Howe bridge. He anticipates a significant shift in traffic toward the new crossing once it becomes operational.

Changing Traffic Patterns

Freight traffic patterns in the region have already begun to shift, with the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia, Ontario, surpassing the Ambassador Bridge as the busiest commercial crossing between Canada and the United States for the first time in decades. Laskowski expects further changes when the Gordie Howe bridge opens, as carriers will have three options to choose from based on cost, convenience, and efficiency.

Toll Comparisons

Currently, commercial trucks pay about $7 per axle to cross the Blue Water Bridge, while those using the Ambassador Bridge pay roughly $20 per axle with a pass and up to $27 per axle without one. Once the Gordie Howe bridge opens, trucks with a Breakaway account will pay $9.60 per axle, while commercial vehicles without an account will pay $12 per axle.

Laskowski emphasized that the trucking industry operates on thin margins, so carriers will carefully evaluate all three options, considering location, destination, processing time, and toll pricing. The result should be a more efficient supply chain, ultimately benefiting consumers.

Direct Highway Connection

A major selling point for the Gordie Howe bridge is its direct connection between Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's Interstate 75, eliminating the need to navigate traffic lights near the Ambassador Bridge. Laskowski highlighted improvements to the automotive, agriculture, commuter, and travel and tourism supply chains.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens also expects a substantial redirection of commercial traffic from Huron Church Road, the main local artery leading to the Ambassador Bridge.
