Canadian Pulse Innovation Project Aims to Transform Agriculture and Food Manufacturing
Canadian Pulse Innovation Project Transforms Agriculture and Food

In a significant development for Canada's agricultural and food manufacturing sectors, Protein Industries Canada has announced a collaborative project with AGT Foods and Sweet Nutrition. This initiative is specifically designed to advance the next generation of pulse-based ingredients and finished food products, aiming to unlock greater value from Canadian-grown crops.

Strengthening Domestic Capabilities and Food Security

The project focuses on improving the functionality of pulse proteins, starches, and fibers derived from peas, lentils, and faba beans. By enhancing these ingredients, the collaboration seeks to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and bring more affordable, nutritious products to market. This effort is expected to strengthen Canada's food supply chain and contribute to national food security.

Government Support and Economic Impact

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, emphasized the project's importance. "This project will strengthen Canada's ability to transform homegrown pulses into nutritious, affordable foods for Canadian families, while creating new opportunities for farmers and processors," she stated. "It reflects our government's commitment to supporting Canadian jobs and building a resilient economy."

Similarly, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, highlighted the role of innovation. "Canada's pulse sector is a strong driver of our agri-food economy, and projects like this demonstrate how innovation can turn Canadian grown crops into high value food products," he said. "By supporting companies as they develop new ingredients and processing methods, we're strengthening our food supply chain and helping deliver high quality, affordable food to families across Canada."

Innovative Processing Techniques and Product Development

The project will involve advanced processing and post-fractionation techniques, including:

  • Heat-moisture treatment
  • Blending
  • Extrusion

These methods are intended to enhance ingredient performance and consistency. The improved ingredients will be utilized in a variety of finished food products, such as:

  1. Cereals
  2. Baking mixes
  3. High-protein snacks
  4. Single-serve, high-protein offerings

Expanding Manufacturing and Market Opportunities

The initiative will support increased efficiency and throughput at AGT's extrusion facility in Regina. Concurrently, it will enable Sweet Nutrition to expand and automate its baking and packaging operations in Saskatoon. This expansion is designed to support a broader product portfolio and meet growing consumer demand for "better for you" retail food products that are high in protein and dietary fiber, taste great, and remain affordable.

Tyler Groeneveld, CEO of Protein Industries Canada, commented on the project's broader implications. "This project is a strong example of how food production and value-added agriculture can unlock new markets for Canadian crops and create new economic value for Canada," he said. "By improving the functionality of pulse-based ingredients and connecting them directly to consumer products, these Canadian companies are creating affordable, nutritious food options while strengthening Canada's food security."

Industry Leadership and Future Prospects

Murad Al-Katib, President and CEO of AGT Foods, expressed optimism about the collaboration. "The trends driving consumer demand for 'better for you' retail food products, with enhanced protein and dietary fibre that taste great and are affordable, will result in significant innovation and growth opportunities in the category," he noted. "Combining AGT's knowledge and expertise in pulse ingredients, food product formulation and production at scale with the entrepreneurial drive of nimble companies like Sweet Nutrition is definitely a recipe for success."

This project co-funded by Protein Industries Canada with Sweet Nutrition, compliments AGT's existing business and supports a new generation of pulse product innovators, filling the needs of consumers in this expanding sector."

This project represents a strategic move to leverage Canada's agricultural strengths, drive innovation in food technology, and enhance economic resilience through sustainable and value-added food manufacturing.
