The Calgary Stampede's 4-H on Parade, presented by Brandt at the Nutrien Western Event Centre, has returned for its historic 50th year, featuring the largest sheep show in its history. With over 300 lambs from 30 regional 4-H clubs, the event showcases 105 members aged nine to 21 competing in friendly competition.
A Milestone Event
This year's sheep show is a record-setting affair, with 18 flock entries bringing together participants from across Western Canada. The event moved to the Nashville North Tent to accommodate the growing number of attendees. Jodi Hanrahan, sheep subcommittee chair, highlighted the expansion and the importance of the program.
More Than Livestock
4-H provides more than just livestock experience. Hanrahan noted that members engage in community service, public speaking, and communications events. Her daughter Devyn, a Calgary region 4-H ambassador, overcame shyness through the program. "She's grown a long way and she's very confident now," Hanrahan said.
Parents echoed this sentiment. Brissa Wipf, a project leader for Airdrie 4-H Beef and Sheep Club, praised the program for giving her children a sense of responsibility and community. Siblings Tori and Scott Anderson, former members of Bow Valley Beef and Multi 4-H Club, credit 4-H for their success in running Seven Diamond Sheep Company. "The community and culture behind this 4-H program is really what has shaped us," Scott Anderson said.
Welcoming All Youth
Devyn Hanrahan encourages youth from non-rural areas to join, noting that 4-H Alberta offers intro clubs in Calgary lasting six weeks. These programs allow beginners to experience 4-H without a full-year commitment. Bree Rempfer, this year's grand champion in yearling ewe, described 4-H as "the most welcoming space" that created lifelong friendships.
Event Highlights
4-H on Parade runs through the weekend, with exhibitions including canine agility, steer showing, and cupcake decorating. The event concludes with a charity lamb auction on Sunday morning, with proceeds from the auction benefiting STARS. All funds raised go to support the critical air ambulance service.
