Canadian Student-Built CubeSat MARMOTSat Launching on SpaceX

MARMOTSat, a CubeSat designed and built by students at the University of Victoria, is set to launch into space tomorrow at 12:10 am PT aboard SpaceX's Transporter-17 rideshare mission. The satellite will be deployed into a special orbit designed for consistent Earth observations.

Student-Led Satellite Project Supported by CSA

MARMOTSat is one of nine miniature satellite projects supported through the Canadian Space Agency (CSA)'s CubeSats Initiative in Canada for STEM (CUBICS). This program provides hands-on experience in space science and technology to the next generation of Canadian space professionals.

The CubeSat was entirely designed, built, and tested by students at the University of Victoria, offering them practical exposure to satellite engineering, mission planning, and data analysis.

Launch Details and Orbit

The launch is scheduled for July 7, 2026, at 12:10 am Pacific Time from a SpaceX facility. MARMOTSat will be carried as part of the Transporter-17 rideshare mission, which deploys multiple small satellites into orbit. After separation, the CubeSat will maneuver into a specialized orbit optimized for Earth observation, allowing it to capture consistent imagery and data over time.

Media representatives interested in speaking with a CSA expert or a student team member are asked to contact the CSA Media Relations Office.

About the CUBICS Initiative

The CubeSats Initiative in Canada for STEM (CUBICS) offers postsecondary students resources and opportunities to develop and launch their own satellite projects. According to the CSA, the program aims to foster innovation and build a skilled workforce for Canada's space sector.
