The incident occurred Thursday evening when officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver fled, leading police on a brief pursuit through downtown streets before crashing into a light pole near a fan zone where supporters had gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup.
No injuries were reported among the fans or the driver, who was taken into custody without further incident. Police said the driver faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving and fleeing from police.
The crash site was quickly secured, and fans were allowed to continue enjoying the matches. Vancouver police praised the quick response of officers and the cooperation of the public.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the flight and whether alcohol or drugs were involved. The driver's name has not been released pending charges.
