FIFA has announced it will sell pieces of the field used for the 2026 World Cup final as collectible souvenirs, priced at $450 each. The initiative, revealed on July 10, 2026, aims to raise funds for global football development programs, according to a FIFA spokesperson.
Details of the Sale
Each piece of turf measures approximately 12 by 12 inches, framed with a certificate of authenticity. FIFA plans to sell 10,000 pieces, generating up to $4.5 million. The grass was harvested immediately after the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
“This is a unique opportunity for fans to own a piece of history,” said FIFA Marketing Director Maria Santos. “Proceeds will support grassroots football initiatives worldwide.”
Reaction and Criticism
Some fans and analysts have criticized the move as overly commercial. “It feels like FIFA is monetizing every aspect of the tournament,” said sports economist Dr. James Liu. However, others see it as a harmless memento for enthusiasts.
The sale follows a trend of sports memorabilia, including pieces of stadiums and game-used equipment. FIFA previously sold turf from the 2022 World Cup final at lower prices.
