Alexander Zverev ended the surprising run of British wild card Arthur Fery in the Wimbledon semifinals on Thursday, winning 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 to reach his second straight Grand Slam final. The German sixth seed will face Novak Djokovic for the championship on Sunday.
Dominant Performance from Zverev
Zverev controlled the match from the start, breaking Fery's serve three times in the first set. The 29-year-old German fired 12 aces and won 82% of his first-serve points, according to match statistics. Fery, ranked 143rd in the world, struggled to find his rhythm against Zverev's powerful groundstrokes.
“I played my best tennis when I needed to,” Zverev said in his on-court interview. “Arthur is a great talent, and he showed that this week. I had to stay focused and take my chances.”
Fery's Breakthrough Tournament
Fery, 22, became the first British male wild card to reach the Wimbledon semifinals since 2001. He defeated three seeded players en route to the final four, including 2022 finalist Nick Kyrgios. Despite the loss, Fery will rise to a career-high ranking inside the top 100.
“It's been an incredible journey,” Fery said. “I'm disappointed with today, but I'll learn from this experience. Zverev was just too good today.”
Djokovic Awaits in Final
Zverev will face seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, who defeated Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the other semifinal. Djokovic is seeking his eighth Wimbledon title and 25th Grand Slam overall. Zverev holds a 4-8 career record against the Serbian, but won their most recent meeting at the 2021 ATP Finals.
“Novak is the greatest of all time on grass,” Zverev said. “I'll need to play the match of my life to beat him. But I'm confident in my game.”
Final Showdown
The men's final is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. local time on Centre Court. Zverev is aiming for his second Grand Slam title, having won the 2020 US Open. Djokovic is looking to extend his record for most Grand Slam titles in men's tennis.
