Ottawa is set to host a free public watch party at LeBreton Flats for Canada’s historic Round of 16 match in the FIFA World Cup, following a groundswell of fan enthusiasm that saw pubs packed to capacity during the group stage.
Event Details and Location
The City of Ottawa announced the watch party on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, as the Canadian men’s national team advanced past the group stage for the first time in decades. The event will take place at LeBreton Flats Park, with a large screen and sound system set up for fans to watch the match live. Gates will open two hours before kickoff, and the event is free and open to all ages.
According to city officials, the decision to hold a public viewing came after thousands of fans filled venues like the Glebe Central Pub on June 12, 2026, to watch Canada defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–1. That match drew an estimated 1,200 fans to the pub alone, with lines stretching down Bank Street.
Prior Fan Turnout
During the group stage, restaurants and bars across Ottawa reported record-breaking crowds. The Glebe Central Pub owner, Mark Thompson, said in a statement that the Bosnia match was the busiest day in the pub’s 15-year history. “We served over 800 pints during the game and had people standing shoulder to shoulder from the first whistle to the last,” Thompson said.
The city expects even larger crowds for the Round of 16 match, which will determine whether Canada advances to the quarterfinals for the first time. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe urged fans to arrive early and use public transit, as parking near LeBreton Flats will be limited.
Safety and Logistics
Ottawa Police will be on site to manage crowds and ensure public safety. The city has also arranged for additional OC Transpo buses and O-Train service to run after the match. Organizers recommend fans bring blankets or low chairs, as seating will not be provided.
“This is a moment for all of Canada to come together and celebrate our team,” said Sutcliffe in a press release. “We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the game safely and comfortably.”
The watch party is expected to draw up to 10,000 fans, making it one of the largest public gatherings for a sporting event in Ottawa since the 2017 Canada 150 celebrations.
