TSN Crew Rips U.S. World Cup Exit to Belgium: 'Over-Hyped'

TSN's soccer analysts did not hold back after the United States men's national team suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday night in Seattle. Kevin Kilbane, a former Irish international and current TSN analyst, led the critique, stating bluntly: 'This team is so over-hyped.'

Analysts Call U.S. Performance Embarrassing

Speaking on TSN's post-match coverage from Vancouver, Kilbane did not mince words. 'They have been demolished today. They were schooled. They were embarrassed on and off the pitch because Belgium showed how flawed they really are,' he said. The defeat sent the U.S. packing at the same stage as co-hosts Canada and Mexico, all eliminated in the Round of 16.

Kilbane suggested the Americans had bought into their own hype after a 4-1 group-stage win over Paraguay. 'Do you think they were smelling themselves?' he asked. 'They were actually thinking they were going to go on and win this World Cup. They believed they could go all the way. But this is the level. This is what they are.'

Defensive Mistakes and Panic

Fellow analyst Steven Caldwell, a former professional defender, echoed the criticism. 'It's hard to explain how bad they are at this level,' Caldwell said. 'They made multiple mistakes on all of the goals. Real terrible stuff. I have to say I haven't seen such terrible defending in this tournament. At this level you can't make these mistakes. You just embarrass yourself.'

Caldwell added: 'This has to be recognized as a failure for them when the pressure was at the highest. You wonder if the occasion was too much for the U.S. or if it was just outclassed. Everyone was way below par. Everyone was terrible, nowhere near the level.'

Pulisic Criticism and Host Nation Comparison

Kilbane reserved particular criticism for U.S. star winger Christian Pulisic. '(Pulisic) should not be mentioned anywhere among some of the superstars, but the hype train around him … (Pulisic) is as far off (Kylian) Mbappe (of France) and (Lionel) Messi (of Argentina) as could be,' Kilbane said.

During the network's 'Park the Bus' segment, the TSN crew compared the performances of the three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Caldwell gave the edge to Canada, which lost 3-0 to Morocco but impressed in the first half. 'I don't think Mexico played particularly well (against England), but the way Canada played in the first half against Morocco and the way they dominated … yes, they didn't get the goal but the football was brilliant,' Caldwell said. 'It was the best football I've seen them play, maybe ever. There was a progression to their play (in the tournament.) The U.S. was the opposite.'

Kilbane added: 'Canada can take the most credit of the host nations for what they achieved here.' He noted that the U.S. win over Paraguay 'was almost the worst thing that could have happened. That's when the hype of all hype trains began.'
